Mister Mould

Types of mould found indoor and outdoor

Below is a list of the most common types of mould found outdoors and sometimes indoors together with their possible adverse health effects. With most air and surface sampling tests that I perform at least 6 to 10 different strains/types of mould are identified. Stachybotrys aka: toxic black mould is not commonly found in air samples unless it has been allowed to dry and has been disturbed. It is a tertiary coloniser that requires long standing water problems (months or years) It is usually a more slimy substance that is related more to water damaged cellulose containing building materials such as drywall, giprock and mdf skirting boards. A surface or bulk sample is usually required to identify it’s presence.

Mould fact: Mould spores are microscopic. Detected at 600 X magnification. By the time you see visible mould growth with your eyes it will represent approx 50 million mould spores on the area of your thumb nail and will involve 6 to 12 different types of mould species.
