Should you paint over mould

Should you paint over mould

The short answer is definitely not!

While painting over mould will temporarily hide it, however it won’t resolve the issue but rather make things worse. Mould will continue to grow under the paint unless properly treated and will eventually reappear, bringing the same problems as before. Even anti-mould paints wont work as they are to help prevent mould growth not cure a mould issue. These paints have no properties to kill mould but rather a mild anti-microbial property to help resist mould growth. Mould will still grow on these types of paint if the moisture is available for 48 hours or more. e.g. poorly ventilated bathrooms.

If you have mould growing on your walls or ceilings you need to remove it as quickly as possible. Mould is a health hazard, it produces irritants that can cause allergic reactions when inhaled, especially in vulnerable people. Preferably it should be professionally treated before painting.

I have done many, many inspections where the mould was painted over only to be visible growing under the paint and in some cases growing through the paint. If you decide to paint over the mould growth you will be stuck in a yearly loop where you will need to repaint over and over or sand the area back and start again. The best and cheapest fix is to professional treat the mould growth and then paint.
